How to Dress in Singapore

Posted by on

Travelling to Singapore? Not sure what to pack? Singapore weather is rather unpredictable, you can find yourself caught in a heavy downpour when it was perfectly sunny just 10 minutes ago. One thing that you'd know for sure Singapore is hot and humid almost all year round.  Temperature ranges from 26-35 degree Celcius, while humidity can reach as high as 90%!

But don't be fooled with the general temperature range (and pack only skimpy outfit) as Singapore buildings and public transportation are notoriously over air-conditioned. While outside temperature is 30 degree Celcius, inside it could be as low as 21 degree, enough to give you that uncomfortable chill.

Follow our tips on how to dress in Singapore.

1. Get the fabric right!

Opt for cotton, linen and silk clothing when in Singapore. They are comfortable and light on the skin. Do avoid bringing polyester clothing that tend to cling to your skin when you sweat. See some local brands that offer such clothing: Source Collections, Wray Crafted, and Finix Wear. See more options for sustainable brands at Zerrin that offers great weather-appropriate fashion here

2. Get Layered

Pack an extra piece of clothing in your day bag that can keep you warm in the air-conditioned spaces, i.e. lightly woven linen jacket or shirt, that can be worn in multiple stylish layering style. See a great one from local brand We are Sui below.

3. Pack a Scarf

Bring a couple of silk or cotton scarves to keep you warm in those cold restaurants and museums, and to be worn as stylish tops. It can also double as a sarong to cover your bare legs or shoulder when you enter religious spaces i.e. Indian temples. Forgot to bring one? Fret not, you can get scarves with Singapore-inspired prints at Binary Style (it also makes a great gift!). See how you can style your scarves below.

4. Pack an Umbrella

Bring an umbrella that can double as rain protection and parasol. It is common in Singapore to wear a parasol as the sun can be unforgivable. You will be glad that you have one ready. Don't forget to protect your skin with your trusted suncream!

Last tip:

Bring a refillable water bottle that can be filled in the city's many water fountain for proper hydration. And lastly enjoy our sunny island!
